The 30-second verdict
Xi'an is where China begins. For 13 dynasties, emperors ruled from here, and today it's the only place where you can stand face-to-face with an army buried for 2,200 years. If Beijing is "imperial China above ground" and Shanghai is "China in 2050," Xi'an is "China 2,000 years ago, intact." It's the most history-dense stop on the classic Beijing–Xi'an–Shanghai "golden triangle" route.
But Xi'an is also a real, working city — flat, dry, and food-obsessed (the Muslim Quarter alone is worth the trip). English is thinner than in Beijing or Shanghai, so you'll lean more on translation apps. The payoff is huge: this is the most "authentically ancient" experience in China, and it's surprisingly cheap.

Cycling the City Wall — don't skip it
Xi'an's Ming-era wall is the most complete ancient city wall in China: 13.7 km around, wide enough for two lanes of traffic. The single best thing to do in the city is rent a bike at Yongning Gate (South Gate) and ride the full loop — it takes about 2 hours, costs RMB 45 for the bike, and gives you the whole old city laid out below you. Sunset is magical; in summer go at 6pm to beat the heat.
Getting around Xi'an
Xi'an is flat and grid-like inside the wall, and its metro now has 8+ lines covering the main sights. It's very manageable.
- Metro: RMB 2-7 per ride, bilingual signage, covers the walled city, the museum, the pagoda, and the airport link (Line 14). Full walkthrough in our China metro guide.
- To the Terracotta Warriors: Metro Line 9 to Huaqingchi, then bus 613 / tourist shuttle (~20 min). Or a Didi (~RMB 100-150 from the centre).
- Didi (ride-hailing): English interface, foreign cards via Alipay/WeChat. Use it for the Lintong day trip return.
- Walking/cycling: Inside the wall everything is close. The Muslim Quarter, Drum Tower, and wall are all within a 10-minute walk of each other.
- Airport: Xi'an Xianyang (XIY), ~40 km out; metro Line 14 or airport bus (~1h).
Food in Xi'an
Xi'an sits at the end of the Silk Road, so its food blends northern Chinese, Hui Muslim, and Central Asian influences. It's hands-down one of the best eating cities in China — and cheap. Don't leave without trying these:
| Dish | What it is | Where to try |
|---|---|---|
| Roujiamo (肉夹馍) | "Chinese hamburger" — chopped stewed pork in a crispy flatbread | Any Muslim Quarter stall, RMB 8-15 |
| Yangrou paomo (羊肉泡馍) | Mutton soup with bread you tear in yourself | Old-name shops near the Bell Tower |
| Biangbiang noodles | Wide, belt-like hand-pulled noodles in chili oil | Wuxing Street / Muslim Quarter |
| Liangpi (凉皮) | Cold sesame-chili noodles, refreshing in summer | Wei's Liangpi chain |
| Zenggao (甑糕) | Steamed glutinous rice with red dates, sweet | Street breakfast stalls |
| Pomegranate juice (石榴汁) | Fresh-squeezed, Xi'an is famous for pomegranates | Muslim Quarter, RMB 10-15 |
Where to stay in Xi'an
Stay inside or just outside the city wall — that's where the action and the metro are.
| Area | Best for | Vibe |
|---|---|---|
| Bell Tower / Drum Tower | First-timers, food, transit | Central, lively, walk to the Muslim Quarter |
| Yongning Gate (South Gate) | Photos, quiet, design hotels | Right on the wall, pretty at night |
| Little Wild Goose Pagoda / South | Museums, families | Calmer, near Shaanxi History Museum |
| Datang area (Qujiang) | Nightlife, Tang theme | Near the Grand Tang Mall shows |
Daily cost breakdown (per person, 2026)
| Item | Budget | Mid-range |
|---|---|---|
| Hostel / 3-star hotel | RMB 120-250 | RMB 350-700 |
| Food (3 meals + snacks) | RMB 60-120 | RMB 150-300 |
| Metro + Didi | RMB 20-40 | RMB 50-120 |
| Attractions | RMB 120-180 | RMB 180-400 |
| Total / day | RMB 250-450 | RMB 700-1,200 |
That's roughly USD 35-170/day. Xi'an is one of the best value stops in China — cheaper than Beijing and far cheaper than Shanghai — and the food is so good you'll want to eat your way through the savings.
Best time to visit Xi'an
Xi'an has four sharp seasons — continental, dry, and dusty. Timing matters a lot:
| Season | What it's like | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Spring (Mar-May) | 15-28C, blooming, lower dust | Best — book early |
| Autumn (Sep-Nov) | 15-28C, clear, crisp | Best — ideal for the wall |
| Summer (Jun-Aug) | 35-40C, hot, humid, crowded | OK; do outdoor stuff at dawn/dusk |
| Winter (Dec-Feb) | 0-10C, dry, grey | Cheap + empty, but cold |
Best day trips from Xi'an
Xi'an is the base for two of China's most dramatic excursions:
| Destination | From Xi'an | Why go |
|---|---|---|
| Mount Hua (Huashan) | ~30 min (high-speed train) | One of China's 5 sacred peaks; the "Plank Road in the Sky" cliffs |
| Huaqing Palace | ~1h (metro + bus) | Tang royal hot-spring palace + the Longest Hatred night show |
| Mount Zhongnan / Louguantai | ~1.5h | Taoist mountain, quiet temples, autumn ginkgo |
Xi'an in your China route
Xi'an is the middle stop of the classic "golden triangle":
- Beijing → Xi'an → Shanghai is the most popular first-timer route. High-speed trains link them: Beijing–Xi'an ~4.5h, Xi'an–Shanghai ~6h. Xi'an breaks up the modern-city feel with 2,000 years of history in the middle.
- Pick Xi'an if imperial history, the Warriors, and Silk Road food are why you came to China.
- Skip Xi'an only if your trip is short (under 7 days) and you'd rather do two cities well than three in a rush.

FAQ
Do I need a visa for Xi'an? Xi'an is inland, so the 240-hour visa-free transit is harder to use than in Shanghai — most visitors need a tourist (L) visa in advance. Check the rules in our visa-free transit guide.
Will my phone work? Google services are blocked, so download offline maps (Maps.me, Organic Maps) and a VPN before you fly. Our VPN guide explains which actually work in 2026.
Can I use my card? Yes, with Alipay/WeChat Pay linked to a foreign card — that's how you'll pay for the metro, Didi, and street food. Step-by-step: Alipay foreign card setup.
How many days minimum? Two is a fine taste (Warriors + wall + Muslim Quarter); three is the sweet spot; four or five lets you add Huaqing and Mount Hua. See the itineraries above.
