About China Travel Insider

We build the guide we wished we had before our first trip to China — practical, tested, and free of the fluff that leaves foreign visitors stranded at a metro gate with a dead SIM.

Who we are

China Travel Insider is run by a small team that spends real time on the ground in China helping foreign visitors solve the problems that actually break a trip: getting a VPN that works, linking a foreign card to Alipay, reading a metro map, and figuring out which visa rule applies to their passport.

Most "China travel" content is written by people who haven't done the logistics recently. Ours is updated for 2026 — new app versions, current ticket prices, the latest visa-free rules — because the details change fast and stale advice is worse than no advice.

Why our guides are different

Practical over poetic

We tell you the exact button to tap, the price to expect, and the mistake that gets people denied — not just "China is beautiful."

Tested, not theorized

VPNs, eSIMs, and payment apps are tried inside China. If it didn't work on a real device, it's not in the guide.

What we cover

  • 20 destinations — from Beijing and Shanghai to Chengdu, Xi'an, Guilin, and beyond, with itineraries and 2026 ticket prices.
  • Apps & payments — Alipay/WeChat Pay with a foreign card, translation apps, offline maps.
  • Internet — which VPN and eSIM actually work in 2026.
  • Visa & entry — the 240-hour visa-free transit rules, eligibility, and the mistakes that get travelers denied.
  • Safety & culture — common scams, etiquette, and what's normal vs. what to avoid.

How we make money (and stay honest)

We sell PDF guides. Our recommendations are independent: we recommend what works, and we tell you when a free option is better. If a tool is unreliable, it gets called out.
