The 30-second answer
These are not single sights. Each is a park the size of a small city with several entrance gates, internal shuttles, and timed tickets. The failure mode is predictable: you arrive at the wrong gate, queue for the wrong shuttle, and by midday you have seen one viewpoint and missed the famous one.
The fix is to decide the gate, the order, and the booking before you leave the hotel. Below are the two most commonly mismanaged sites, with a routing that works on the ground.
The routing, already mapped
Our Complete Guide has gate-by-gate plans for Zhangjiajie, Guilin, the Great Wall, and the Forbidden City, with shuttle order and booking windows. Offline on your phone when signal drops.

Three features make Chinese mega-attractions different from a European museum or a national park you know:
- Multiple entrances, different payoffs. Zhangjiajie has east, west, and side gates; only the east gate feeds the core Avatar-peak loop efficiently.
- Internal transit is mandatory. You cannot walk the whole park. You ride shuttles and cable cars in a set sequence, and the wrong sequence adds hours.
- Timed and capped tickets. The Forbidden City caps daily entries; the Li River cruise sells by boat; miss the window and the day is gone.
Zhangjiajie internal routing
The goal is the quartz-sandstone pinnacles (the "Avatar mountains"), which sit at Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain. The efficient loop starts at the east gate.
Day 1: Yuanjiajie + Tianzi Mountain
Day 2 (optional): Tianmen Mountain
Guilin & Yangshuo routing
The mistake here is staying in Guilin city and day-tripping to the river. The river is the point, and the town at the far end, Yangshuo, is where you want to be.
Day 1: Li River cruise Guilin → Yangshuo
Day 2: Yangshuo countryside
What to book in advance
These sell out or cap entry. The window is the gap between "I'll do it when I get there" and "it's full today."
| Attraction | Book ahead | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Forbidden City, Beijing | ~7 days | Daily entry cap; no tickets at the gate |
| Li River cruise, Guilin | 3 to 7 days | Boats sell by seat; peak sells out |
| Giant Panda Base, Chengdu | 2 to 3 days, go early | Morning viewing only; capped |
| Zhangjiajie (peak) | 2 to 3 days | Elevator and cable car slots fill |
| Great Wall (Mutianyu) | 1 to 3 days | Cable car slots on busy days |
Mistakes that burn a day
- Wrong gate. Entering Zhangjiajie at the west gate adds a long transfer to reach the Avatar peaks. Use the east gate for the core loop.
- Yangshuo as a day trip. Staying in Guilin and commuting to the river wastes the cruise and the countryside. Sleep in Yangshuo.
- One day for all of Zhangjiajie. Forest park plus Tianmen Mountain in one day means rushing both. Split into two days.
- No offline ticket. Signal drops inside the park. A booking you cannot open is a booking you cannot use.
- Walk-up at capped sites. The Forbidden City and panda base do not sell at the door. Arrive unbooked and the day is lost.
- Mixing two ticket systems. Zhangjiajie forest park and Tianmen Mountain are separate purchases. Buy both or skip one deliberately.
FAQ
Which Zhangjiajie gate should I use? The east gate of the National Forest Park. It feeds the shuttle to the cable car up to Yuanjiajie, the efficient path to the Avatar peaks and Tianzi Mountain.
Is one day enough for Zhangjiajie? For the core forest park, one tight day works if you start early and prebook the elevator. Add a second day for Tianmen Mountain, which is a separate site near the city.
Should I stay in Guilin or Yangshuo? Yangshuo. The Li River cruise ends there, and the countryside is the draw. Guilin city is best treated as the cruise departure point, not your base.
How far ahead to book the Li River cruise? Three to seven days in normal season, earlier in spring and autumn peak. Boats sell by seat and popular departures fill.
Can I do these without a guide? Yes, with the routing planned. Signage is in Chinese and English at the main gates, and shuttles are clearly marked. A guide helps mainly if you want deep context or skip the planning.

You have a tight route
Zhangjiajie core loop only (Yuanjiajie + Tianzi Mountain), early start, elevator prebooked. Guilin as a cruise-to-Yangshuo day with no city sightseeing. Both work as single days if you commit.
You want it done well
Zhangjiajie: forest park day one, Tianmen Mountain day two. Guilin: cruise day one, Yangshuo countryside day two. The second day is what turns a rushed photo into a real memory.
