The 30-second verdict
If your route is Country A → China → Country C (or Hong Kong / Macau / Taiwan), you can land in one city and train to several others within 10 days. That turns a boring 24-hour layover into a real mini-trip. The only hard rule: you must leave to a third region — you can't fly back to where you started.
The rule in one paragraph
Citizens of 55 countries holding a confirmed onward ticket to a third country/region within 240 hours can enter China visa-free through any of 65 designated ports across 24 provinces. The 2025 update lets you cross provincial borders during the stay — as long as you remain inside the union of allowed zones. You still must depart to a third region (Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan count). For the full country list, documents, and the "mistakes" checklist, see our policy guide.
Eligible regions (the 24)
You can travel freely within each of these (activity zones in parentheses for the restricted ones):
| Region | Key cities you can visit | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei | Beijing, Tianjin, Shijiazhuang | Whole region |
| Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui | Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Suzhou, Huangshan | Whole region |
| Shaanxi | Xi'an | Whole province |
| Sichuan | Chengdu, Leshan, Dujiangyan (+9 cities) | 10-city zone |
| Guangdong | Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai | Whole province |
| Guangxi | Guilin, Yangshuo, Beihai (+11 cities) | 12-city zone |
| Yunnan | Kunming, Lijiang, Dali (+7) | 9-prefecture zone |
| Chongqing, Hainan, Fujian, Shandong, Hubei, Hunan, Henan, Liaoning, Guizhou | Chongqing, Haikou/Sanya, Xiamen, Qingdao, Wuhan, Changsha, Zhengzhou, Dalian, Guiyang | Most whole-province |
| Heilongjiang / Shanxi / Jiangxi | Harbin / Taiyuan+Datong / Nanchang+Jingdezhen | City-restricted |
The best city combos
🗼 Beijing + Xi'an
The classic history pairing. High-speed train links them in ~4.5h. Forbidden City + Great Wall, then the Terracotta Army. 10 days covers both at ease. Guides: Beijing, Xi'an.
🏜 Shanghai + Hangzhou/Suzhou
East-coast ease. Bullet trains to Hangzhou (1h) and Suzhou (25min). Tea fields, canals, The Bund. Most English-friendly combo. Guide: Shanghai.
🗻 Guangzhou + HK / Macau
Enter Guangzhou, then the high-speed link or ferry to Hong Kong/Macau (which count as your third region for exit). Great food + skyline. Note: you exit via HK/Macau.
🐼 Chengdu + Chongqing
Pandas + spicy food + wartime capital architecture. ~1.5h train apart, both in the transit zone. Guide: Chengdu.
🏔 Guilin + Yangshuo

Sample 10-day routes
Route A — History express (Beijing → Xi'an → Shanghai → HK)
Route B — South scenic (Guangzhou → Guilin → HK)
Best quick stopovers (under 3 days)
- Shanghai — most to see in least time; metro + walkable Bund.
- Xi'an — the Terracotta Army alone justifies a 2-day stop.
- Chengdu — panda base + hotpot, compact and cheap.
- Harbin — winter only (Ice Festival, Dec–Feb); the one-city Heilongjiang zone.
Mistakes that get you denied
- No confirmed onward ticket — you need a booked seat/flight leaving China within 240h, shown at check-in.
- Overstaying the zone — don't wander into a non-eligible province (e.g., Tibet) during transit.
- Wrong port — enter/exit only through the 65 designated ports; a random land crossing won't qualify.
- Assuming visa-free = no paperwork — you still fill an arrival card and may show hotels/flights. Have them ready.
FAQ
Can I visit more than two cities? Yes — the 2025 update allows crossing provincial borders within the 24-zone union. Route A above hits three regions legally.
Does Hong Kong count as leaving China? Yes, for transit purposes Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan are "third regions." Enter mainland, exit via HK, depart — valid.
Do I need a hotel booked for every city? Not strictly, but have your first-night accommodation and onward proof. Register with police within 24h if staying outside hotels (most travelers stay in hotels that do it for you).
What if my flight is delayed and I exceed 240h? Build buffer — book your exit a day early. Overstaying voids the transit privilege and can cause entry issues later.
