The Li River cruise — don't miss it
The Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo is the reason most foreigners come to Guilin, and it's the one experience where you should spend the money. For 4 hours you drift past water buffalo, cormorant fishermen, and karst peaks rising straight out of the water — the view printed on China's 20-yuan note is real, near Xingping.
- Classes: 3-star (¥215, basic but fine), 4-star (¥360, includes lunch, fewer crowds, better decks). Locals tip: the 4-star is worth it for the quieter top deck and the morning light.
- Departure: Zhujiang Port (~40 min from Guilin centre by shuttle); boats leave ~9:00-9:30am, arrive Yangshuo ~1:30pm.
- Best light: the morning cruise catches the soft, misty "painting" light. Aim for a clear, slightly humid morning.
- Alternative for tight budgets: skip the full cruise and take a Yulong River bamboo raft in Yangshuo (manual, silent, gorgeous) plus a local bus to Xingping for the iconic bend — far cheaper, just as pretty.
Getting around the Guilin region
Guilin has no metro — you get around by tourist shuttle buses, taxis, Didi (ride-hailing), and the high-speed rail to Yangshuo. It's easy once you know the hubs.
- Air: Guilin Liangjiang Airport (KWL), ~50 min to the city by airport bus (¥20) or taxi (~¥120). Flights from Beijing (3h), Shanghai (2.5h), Guangzhou (1h), Hong Kong.

- Guilin → Yangshuo: the Li River cruise (scenic, 4h) or a bus (~1.5h, ¥25). Yangshuo Station is fastest if you skip the cruise.
- In Yangshuo: rent a bike (¥30-50/day) or e-bike (¥50-80/day) — the countryside loop is flat and safe. Didi works for longer hops.
- Guilin → Longji: direct tourist bus (~2h, ¥50) from the city bus station, or a private driver (~¥300 round trip).
