The 30-second verdict
Xiamen is a breezy coastal city in Fujian — clean, green, and far more relaxed than Beijing or Shanghai. Its signature is Gulangyu Island, a vehicle-free islet of winding lanes, old consulates, and piano museums. If you want "China but chill," Xiamen delivers, and the food scene (seafood + Southern Min snacks) is a highlight.
The catch: Gulangyu gets crowded on weekends and holidays, and the ferry is the only way on/off the island, so timing matters. Treat Xiamen as a 2-3 day stop, often paired with the Tulou earth buildings inland.

Day trips from Xiamen
The standout is the UNESCO Tulou earth buildings — massive circular and square clan fortresses of the Hakka people, ~2h inland. A guided day trip is easiest, but public buses reach Nanjing county too. Xiamen also sits on the Fujian coast rail line, an easy hop from Fuzhou or Shenzhen. For multi-city planning see our first-timer itinerary.
