Read this first. We have not used TenPayGo on a trip. Everything marked confirmed below comes from Apple's or Google's own app records and from Tencent's own website. Everything marked reported comes from other people's published write-ups. Anything marked unverified we could not confirm from an official source, so check it yourself before relying on it.

Quick verdict

Try it if you want a payment app that does not require a mainland phone number, you prefer Apple Pay, or you are curious about a third option. It costs about ten minutes to set up before you fly.

Do not rely on it as your only payment method. TenPayGo is young, its current store ratings are modest, and it sits on the same Weixin Pay network as WeChat Pay itself. If something blocks Weixin Pay, it will block TenPayGo too.

For the established two, read our Alipay vs WeChat Pay comparison. This review covers only what TenPayGo changes.

What TenPayGo is

TenPayGo is a standalone app from Tencent, separate from WeChat. You do not need a WeChat account to use it.

The description in both official app listings reads: "At merchants that accept Weixin Pay, you can pay directly with TenPayGo, without exchanging cash or preparing change."

That single sentence explains both its value and its ceiling. The cashier sees an ordinary Weixin Pay transaction, which means the app reaches the same merchants as WeChat Pay and inherits the same limits, blocks and outages.

Its own website describes three ways to fund a payment: an international bank card, Apple Pay, and overseas e-wallets. It also lists spending categories including taxis, metro, dining, shopping, supermarkets, hotels, coffee, bars, attractions and healthcare, plus AI translation features.

Availability and official app information

These details come from Apple's official app record for the US storefront and from Google Play's listing, both checked on 16 October 2026.

The Android version is listed on Google Play under the package com.tencent.wxpai, showing the same 24 September 2026 update date. The iOS and Android identifiers differ (com.tencent.wego on iOS), which is normal for cross-platform releases.

Two practical notes. The app interface is English only, confirmed in Apple's records. And on Android it installs through Google Play, so a phone without Google Play services cannot install it. Ratings differ by storefront, so you may see a different number in your region.

Setup

Confirmed steps, based on the official listings and Tencent's own website:

  1. Download TenPayGo from the App Store or Google Play. Check that the developer name reads Tencent Technology (Shenzhen) Company Limited, since lookalike payment apps exist.
  2. Register an account. Both official listings confirm an account is required. Neither states the registration method. Multiple third-party reports say an email address is enough with no mainland phone number, and we found no official source contradicting this, but the store listings themselves do not confirm it. Reported, not confirmed.
  3. Add a payment method. Tencent's site lists three: an international bank card, Apple Pay, or an overseas e-wallet. Which specific card brands work is unverified, because no official TenPayGo list exists.
  4. Pay at a merchant by scanning their Weixin Pay code or showing your own payment code. Both official listings and the app's own screenshots show these two flows.
Do this before you fly, not in a shop queue. Make one small test payment at home and check the confirmation screen for any fee line. Verification emails can be slow to arrive abroad, and troubleshooting on a hotel connection is far worse than troubleshooting at home.

Fees

This is the part with the least certainty, so read it carefully.

Confirmed: Tencent publishes no dedicated fee schedule for TenPayGo. We could not find one on its website or in either app listing.

Confirmed, but for a different product: Weixin Pay's international card fees are documented separately by Tenpay. Where those rules apply, a single transaction of ¥200 or less carries no international card fee, and a transaction above ¥200 carries a 3% fee on the full amount. Refunds return the fee in the same proportion.

Unverified: whether TenPayGo applies exactly the same schedule. Several third-party reports say it does, and describe a fee line visible on the payment screen. We are not presenting that as confirmed.

How to check, in order of reliability:

  1. Read the fee line on the TenPayGo payment confirmation screen before you approve. That is the number that will actually be charged.
  2. Check your own bank's foreign transaction fee, which sits on top and is separate.
  3. Note whether a fee appears at checkout for small purchases. If it does, that tells you a threshold applies to you.

Some blogs describe a promotional period with no fees for new users. We found official pages describing a different promotion for WeChat Pay with different terms, and we could not confirm any promotional offer for TenPayGo. Treat promotional claims as unverified.

Keep small everyday purchases low if you want to stay under a threshold, and carry some cash regardless. Our foreign card fees guide covers the fee structure in the established apps.

Payment limits and real-world risks

No official transaction limits are published for TenPayGo. We are not going to invent numbers. If a large purchase matters to you, plan around a physical card.

Individual user reviews, which are personal reports rather than proof of a widespread fault, mention email verification errors and payments failing after a card was linked successfully. A rating of 3.0 across 65 US ratings is consistent with an app that works for some people and not others.

Practical advice:

  • Test one small payment before you travel.
  • If a payment fails, do not tap confirm repeatedly. Repeated attempts can produce duplicate pending charges on your card statement.
  • If the app shows a payment as successful but the merchant says unpaid, screenshot both and check the transaction history in the app before paying again.
  • Keep a physical card and roughly ¥300 in cash so a payment problem never becomes a stranded situation.
  • If your bank blocks overseas e-commerce, no app solves it. Call the number on the back of your card first. See our foreign card decline fixes.

TenPayGo vs Alipay and WeChat Pay

Briefly, since we compare these two properly in Alipay vs WeChat Pay in China 2026.

Alipay and WeChat Pay are mature, well documented, and have years of published troubleshooting. TenPayGo is newer and simpler, with less independent testing behind it.

Where TenPayGo differs: registration is reported to need only an email, Apple Pay support is built in, and it leaves WeChat's social features out entirely. Where it does not differ: it reaches the same merchants, and a block on Weixin Pay affects it too.

For a first trip, set up the established pair first and add this one only after a successful test.

Your backup payment plan

  1. Alipay with a foreign card, verified with your passport before you fly.
  2. WeChat Pay with the same card, so you are covered if one app is risk-controlled mid-trip.
  3. TenPayGo if you want the third option, tested at home.
  4. A physical Visa or Mastercard for hotels and larger purchases.
  5. Around ¥300 in cash for stalls, taxis and anything that refuses to cooperate.

Test a small payment on each app before departure. Our pre-departure apps checklist and payment troubleshooting guide cover the details.
