The 30-second verdict
Alipay and WeChat Pay do work for foreigners in 2026 - but only after you complete the passport verification step and your home bank allows overseas e-commerce. Most "it doesn't work" reports trace back to the bank, not the app. If one app fails at a given merchant, the other almost always succeeds, which is why we tell every traveler to set up both.
Why payments fail for foreigners
The payment apps themselves are not the usual problem. Foreign cards are routed through the apps' international acquiring, which means your home bank sees a cross-border e-commerce charge and may block it by default. On top of that, tourist wallets require passport verification before any payment will post. Here is the failure map:
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Card added but payment won't go through | Passport verification incomplete | Finish Me -> Services -> Wallet -> Identity Verification |
| "Transaction declined" instantly | Bank travel-lock | Call bank, enable travel mode, retry |
| Works at one shop, fails at next | Merchant acquirer rejects network | Try the other app or other card network |
| Spinner, no confirmation | Cross-border lag | Check Transactions after 10-30s |
Alipay: common failures & fixes
- "Real-name verification required" - tap the prompt and verify with your passport. Alipay is usually the smoother of the two for foreigners; complete this on Wi-Fi at home.
- Card won't bind - re-enter the card number with no spaces; make sure the name matches the card exactly (some banks need the Latin spelling).
- "Risk control" freeze - Alipay sometimes freezes a fresh foreign wallet after one odd charge. Verify again, then wait a few minutes; it usually clears.

WeChat Pay: common failures & fixes
- "Verification failed" - re-enter the passport number exactly as printed, no spaces, matching the photo.
- Card declined - call the bank (travel-lock); also try the other card network. WeChat routes through Tenpay cross-border, which some issuers flag.
- Merchant QR won't scan - use WeChat's Scan from the chat screen; some QR codes open a mini-program, not direct pay.

When the bank declines (not the app)
This is the single most common real failure. Signs it is the bank: instant decline, an SMS from your bank about a "suspicious charge," or the app showing the card as added but every payment failing. Action: call the number on the back of the card, say you are traveling in China and will use the card via Alipay/WeChat Pay, and ask them to allow cross-border e-commerce. Retry after they confirm.
Money pending or held
A cross-border authorization can sit as "pending" for a few days before it either posts or drops off. This is normal and is not a lost payment - the hold releases automatically if the merchant does not capture it. If a payment shows accepted in the app but the merchant says unpaid, show them your Transactions screen; Chinese systems occasionally lag 10-30 seconds.
If nothing works
- Switch apps - Alipay and WeChat Pay rarely fail at the same merchant.
- Switch card network - Visa vs Mastercard vs AmEx are accepted by different acquirers.
- Physical card at POS - most terminals take foreign chip cards directly; tap or insert.
- Cash - carry some; small stalls and taxis can be cash-only. See our foreign-card fee guide before withdrawing.
