The 30-second verdict
Chongqing is China's most visually surreal city. Built across mountains where the Yangtze and Jialing rivers meet, it has earned the nickname the "8D city": monorails that pass through apartment buildings, streets that start on the 22nd floor, and elevator rides that count as transport. For a first-time visitor it is the most fun, most photogenic, and most disorienting city in the country.
It is also a food city, the birthplace of Chongqing hot pot (the numb-spicy original, fiercer than Sichuan's). If you want a China trip with personality, energy, and night views, Chongqing delivers more per hour than almost anywhere else.

The 8D city: how to navigate it
Chongqing's layout confuses even Chinese travelers. The tricks:
- Use the metro, not walking maps. Two points that look adjacent may be 50m apart vertically. The metro (especially Line 2, the riverside loop) is the sightseeing ride itself.
- Liziba Station is where Line 2 passes through a residential building, the iconic photo. Arrive before 9am for the shot without crowds.
- Hongyadong has 11 levels; the "street" entrance at the top and the river side at the bottom are the same building, different floors. Follow the signs, not your instinct.
- Ride-hailing (Didi) is your friend when the hills defeat you. Cheap and quick.

Hot pot & the food scene
Chongqing is where hot pot was born, and the local version is mala (numb-spicy) at full strength. It is a communal pot of chili oil and Sichuan peppercorn; you cook meats, offal, and veg at the table.
| Dish | What it is | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Chongqing hot pot | Numb-spicy broth, dip your own items | Ask for "yuanyang" (half plain) if you fear the heat |
| Small noodles (xiaomian) | Spicy breakfast noodle soup | RMB 8-15, everywhere, a local ritual |
| Sour-and-hot noodles (suanla fen) | Sweet-potato noodles, tangy spicy | Street snack, RMB 10-15 |
| Jiangtuan fish | Local river fish, braised | Chongqing specialty |
Getting around Chongqing
- Metro: 12+ lines, bilingual, RMB 2-8. Line 2 (riverside) and Line 3 are scenic; Line 1 reaches Ciqikou.
- Monorail: Lines 2 and 3 are elevated and are themselves attractions.
- Didi: Cheap, English interface, essential when hills win.
- Cableway: The Yangtze cableway is both transport and a view.
- Trains: North Station and West Station are high-speed hubs. To Chengdu 1-1.5h (the Chengdu-Chongqing pair is a popular duo); to Guilin ~4h.
- Airport: Jiangbei (CKG), metro line 3 or Didi (~40 min).
Where to stay in Chongqing

|---|---|---|
| Jiefangbei / Yuzhong | Center, near Hongyadong, metro | Urban, walkable to sights |
| Guanyinqiao | Shopping, nightlife, metro hub | Lively, younger crowd |
| Riverside (Nan'an) | Hongyadong views across the river | Quieter, great night skyline |
Daily cost breakdown (per person, 2026)
| Item | Budget | Mid-range |
|---|---|---|
| Hostel / 3-star hotel | RMB 120-220 | RMB 350-700 |
| Food (hot pot heavy) | RMB 70-130 | RMB 150-300 |
| Metro + Didi | RMB 15-30 | RMB 40-80 |
| Attractions | RMB 30-60 | RMB 150-250 |
| Total / day | RMB 235-440 | RMB 690-1,330 |

FAQ

Can I use my card? Yes, via Alipay/WeChat Pay with a foreign card. Step-by-step: Alipay setup.
