The short answer
On a normal Chinese Wi-Fi or local SIM, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, X, Gmail, Google Search, Google Maps and YouTube do not load. They work the moment your traffic leaves China through an eSIM routed overseas or a VPN. The app on your phone is fine — it is the network that blocks the destination.

This affects every tourist. Hotel Wi-Fi is still a Chinese network, so it blocks the same sites unless you tunnel out.
Two ways to get through
1. Travel eSIM. A China travel eSIM (Airalo, Holafly, Ubigi, Saily, Nomad) routes your data through Hong Kong or another overseas gateway, giving you a non-Chinese IP. Western apps then load over cellular with zero configuration. Some plans include built-in firewall bypass; others need a VPN on top. See our eSIM vs VPN comparison.
2. VPN. A VPN encrypts and tunnels traffic through an overseas server. It works on any connection — hotel Wi-Fi, eSIM data, local SIM — but China actively blocks VPN servers, so reliability fluctuates. Install and test it before arrival (our VPN guide compares options).
Google Maps alternative
Google Maps does not load in China. Use Amap (Gaode) or Baidu Maps instead — both have English modes, live transit and walking directions, and they actually show Chinese business names correctly. Download offline city maps before you go. If you must use Google Maps, it only works while your eSIM or VPN is active.
WhatsApp alternative
WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger are blocked. WeChat is the default for everyone in China — install it, link a foreign card for WeChat Pay (guide here), and you can message locals, call and pay in one app. For contacting home, WhatsApp and iMessage work only over eSIM/VPN data.
Set up before departure
- Buy and fully activate your travel eSIM at home (test by loading Google).
- Install a VPN and run a speed test.
- Download Amap/Baidu Maps and save offline maps.
- Tell family to expect WhatsApp gaps unless your eSIM/VPN is on.
